by poetry

I cut myself open to find a baseball where there should be a heart

10/26/2010

3. I cut myself open to find a baseball where there should be a heart
4/21/2004

little boy on his bed late at night listening to a baseball game
adorned with a hat, and a jersey to match
dreams of seeing his hero in the hall of fame

boy was only 5 years old when his daddy gave him a glove
he says "my daddy gave it to me and now I give it to you with love"
the smile on the boys face
you could light up any state
"tomorrow we can play catch till dark"

little boy on his bed late at night listening to a baseball game
wearing the glove
knowing that life will never be the same
adorned with a hat, and a jersey to match
dreams of seeing his hero in the hall of fame

little league starts today
"I got a gift for you, come this way"
opening up the box the 11 year old smiles
seeing his son takes a cut, that's my style

little leaguer on his bed late at night listening to a baseball game
wearing the glove with the bat laying next to him
as the light dims
adorned with a hat, and a jersey to match
dreams of seeing his hero in the hall of fame

looking forward to this coming year
a senior captain, colleges are whispering in his ear
today is his first day
his father catches him before he drives away
"Here is a little something for you"
opening up the little box, not having a clue
it's papa's gold baseball charm on a necklace
"good luck son, now you better go before you are late"

little leaguer on his bed late at night listening to a baseball game
wearing the glove with the bat laying next to him
as the light dims
a baseball charm on his chest
the little one gets his rest
adorned with a hat, and a jersey to match
dreams of seeing his hero in the hall of fame

a horrible car crash
daddy going through the dash
going to the wake
his heart aches
looking down, seeing his father in a suit
"thank you father, I love you"

little leaguer on his bed late at night listening to a baseball game
wearing the glove with the bat laying next to him
as the light dims
a baseball charm on his chest
the little one can't get any rest
adorned with a hat, and a jersey to match
no dreams tonight of seeing his hero in the hall of fame

waiting around the phone all day
"you are in the hall of fame" he exclaims "NO WAY!"
... than looking to the sky
"lastly I want to thank a very important guy"
a tear falls from his face
"my father is looking down from another place"
"I always wanted to see my hero in the hall of fame"
"my father's dream came true
his little hero is in the hall of fame, thank you"
