It was Izzy, her mother, who birthed her first and only
Too young to be a mother, simply unable
She bore her only offspring and died.
The two boys who so love Izzy
Took the tiny baby in their hands
Tears saying,"We named it."
"You can save it, can't you?"
And they called the kitten...
Lucky.
I greived for Izzy, little more than a kitten herself
And wished to try and keep this sad little orphan
So, we did all the midnight and 4am feedings,
Loved like a child
Tucked into a heating blanket
Kitten formula and a prayer
That all would go well.
All 2 ounces of her.
And so much the miracle
Greedily feeding,
Gained sometimes a 1/2 ounce, then ounce
She fit end to end on the tiny kitchen scale.
Crys from the box
The constant attention
Lucky bloomed from a tiny weakling
Grew beautiful and loving
I was her salvation and kept her
Safe, Warm and Nurtured.
Eyes opened to see her surrogate
Purred and clawed to be close and warm
Then bumbling, crawling, exploring, searching
It is truly amazing how quick they grow mature
So went a month and a week
We took in our orphan in the morning
Gave her back to the boys at night
And how could we not
Fall in love with Lucky... we did
Everyone who knew her
She captivated.
I don't remember a kitten who was more
Companion. Lucky was playmate with the boys.
With them every waking minute.
Lucky no longer needed us. She was nearly independent
Exploring, playing, learning the world.
I missed her so, but she was not mine to keep.
So, as excuses go, we would often sneak over
'Just the see the boys'. But I could not hide the truth.
I needed to see how she was doing.
2 months more now have past.
and 2 months before that, she entered our lives
Alive and well, brimming with energy
So wildly excited
And full of her magic
Her fearlessness. She never knew fear.
The phone call..
I don't remember much of the message.
Lucky... the car... so sorry. So, so, sorry.
She was running to meet us.
It hurts. Love lost always, always...
I miss you, Lucky.
