Something about the honesty of a child

02/03/2013

Not cool!
Since she was old enough to walk we've been teaching baby girl how to clean up after herself. It works with pretty much everything with the exception of toys. I'm not sure when it became cool in her world to tattle on mommy, but I spilled some water on the floor to which my loving two year old decided to bend down, look at it, point at it, look back up at me and say "you spill." The following is our exact conversation.

Baby: "You spill."
Me: "Yes, I know. It's OK. I'll clean it up."
Baby: "Mommy spill."
Me: "Yes, dear, I know. I spilled. Now I have to get a cloth and clean it."
Baby: (goes running to her dad) "She spill! She spill!"

And there I am, left standing there, shocked and dismayed that my two year old ratted me out for spilling water. And all I kept thinking was "did I teach her that?"

Haha - she's probably not ratting you out, as you put it. She's probably fascinated and astonished by the fact that mummy has spilled something, and so wants to announce this fascinating and astonishing fact to the world! That's just what healthy 2-year-olds do!
