LEADERSHIP@SEA
26th June to 6th July 2008 on Tenacious from London to Rouen

This is my diary when I was on Tenacious going from London to Rouen – 26th June till 6th July 2008.

Watch: Forward Port
Watchleader: Judith Cordery
Buddy: June Jackson – bad back!
Tenacious: West India Dock, London to Rouen, France

Day 1 – 26th June 2008

We had a meeting at 2pm in the meeting we were introduced to all the permanents crew and they spoke about the voyage and all we were in need of knowing about Tenacious and where we are going!
We then did a fire drill which I was helping out with Evac Route 2 which we had to help the wheelchairs out of the boat as they wouldn’t be able to use the lifts!

Then I went to help get the bridge onboard then went on the speed boat to help with the ropes and keep Tenacious in control and not go off course!
Then some of us went up the mast and the yard and learn a bit more about the sails with John and Jim
Then Steve taught us a bit about the ropes
Then went on watch at 0500 – 0800
Day 2 – 27th June 2008
We put up the sails, which looked brilliant when they are up!
I was in mess duty in the galley at 1600 till 1930 Graham and Sue was really pleased what I did in the galley and everyone on Tenacious has noticed how helpful I am!!!
We also did a leadership meeting – Sophie Duckworth, Amy Kelly, Vicky Dittmann, Maddy Oakes, Alex Coakley, James Wilcock, and Mortze, Rob, and the person in charge of us John (Boston mate) when we get to Brugge we have to look up to see what is a ship log!!
The sea was rough by the afternoon so captain (Barbra) decided to take the sails down so I had to help with them and I stayed up a little to help with the watch!
Day 3 – 28th June 2008
I was on mess duty at 0700ish till 1600! So I had to prepare breakfast and lunch and it got very very hot!
We got to Brugge at about 1130. So after lunch we (Rob and I) but we offered to take Karen with us in Brugge about 30 minutes walk from Tenacious.
We looked around, I went in the internet café to look up ship log! And then we went to have supper in this lovely place then we bumped into Steve, Jim, John, Phil, Sophie, Amy, and others while they were waiting for food as it’s John’s birthday!
After they ate dinner some of us went to celebrate at a pub!

Day 4 – 29th June 2008
We still in Brugge but most of the young crew decided to stay 0nboard this time! I am more chatty to other crews – mainly the ones about my age and some older than me!
We helped the people who didn’t go up the mast first day who need help getting up!
We did some work on the sails making sure they are on tight! Vicky and I went and did our leadership scheme task – blindfolded! Vicky and I put the blindfold on together and went around the ship and made a cuppa tea that was fine then we ate supper blindfolded! Then we designed the ship log!
Day 5 – 30th June 2008
We left Brugge around 1100 before we did happy hour: happy hour is where you clean the boat!!
Steve told us a bit about the sails (and shown on the white board) it was very interesting to hear about them! And I bought a book to study them a bit more to try and be ready for another trip!

We saw the Dover cliff – as you can see in the picture!

Day 6 – 1st July 2008-07-08
I was on watch at 0400-0800 which I had to get the sails ready for when we turned off the engine.
I am starting to get to know Tenacious a bit more now and loving it sooo much!
I slept a bit in the afternoon then went on watch at 1800-2000. We had a little thunderstorm but not much but we put the sails down just in case!

Day 7 – 2nd July 2008
Was on watch at 0800-1230 and in that time we had to decide if we wanted to go straight to Rouen as the tide and the wind was going against each other and would have to put the engine on instead of sailing! So we decided to I turn back and go straight to Rouen!
We did Happy hour and Steve told Ann and me to do the chart room as we are ‘sensible’ people –ha what a laugh!!!  I noticed John and Jim laughed at that as well!!!!
Then cleaned the windows with Vinegar and newspaper! They came out shining!
Slept for couple of hours in the afternoon! Arrived at the parking site (for boats before going to Rouen) at night time!
Day 8 – 3rd July 2008

A captain came onboard to get into Rouen safely! We went down a river to Rouen such a lovely place!
I had to go on watch while we were on the river and again at 12:30-16:30 We decided to stay onboard for lunch and supper then we went and have a look around afterwards!
Karen and I decided to look for the train station as we have decided we will be walking there than take a taxi! The buildings in Rouen were very pretty!

Day 9 – 4the July 2008
I was on watch at 0200 – 0400 this morning.
We had to sort out the ropes and did happy hour as well! Then went on the laptop and typed up the contact list which will come on the disk with some more photos!
Clive was getting sponsored to shave his hair and beard off!
Then we had supper out with our watchers and we were joined with three of the other groups! Then Rob, Vicky, James, Alex, Maddy and I went to town and went to get some drinks!

Day 10 – 5th July 2008
Had mess duty in the morning and I also offered to help before the barbeque – possible good thing – loads to do and two of the mess duty didn’t turn up!
We are inviting another ship to join us this evening as our captain knows theirs! And then we went on theirs - very interesting night!

Day 11 – 6th July 2008
We had a happy hour which no one really concentrated on much and didn’t do very good job of it!
Got on the train to Le Harve at lunch time – Jim, Vicky, Karen, June, John, Sophie and Amy. When we got there we found a sandwich café Vicky, Karen, June, Jim and I went there then we went to the ferry to Portsmouth at 1700 and got to Portsmouth about 2130!

I have gotten to know a bit more about myself in this trip!!! My confidence has grown so much in the last few days and I am glad I did this trip! And would like to thank you for letting me go on this voyage and be able to do the leadership@sea! And would like to say thanks to the permanent crews to make it enjoyment!

I think the trip went very well but I would have liked more things to do when we were sitting down even though it was nice to read and chat to other people and get to know them but… possible not as much as we did!
Maybe if there are more things to do like:
• Learning a bit more about Jubilee Sailing Trust
• Knot tying course
• Learn a bit about navigation
or something on those lines!
