The Island of Misfit Toys

01/01/2014

This may sound sophomoric as I'm now 17 years old, but I have a toy chest in my room that has every single toy I've had since I was an infant. This includes a baby doll that plays a lullaby when you pull its cap, my plush baby books with the little finger puppets attached, a few teething rings (sanitized, obviously) and approximately 6 billion stuffed animals. I call this chest my "Island of Misfit Toys" because there's a defect of some sort to every one of them. Admittedly, my parents are cheapskates, and proud of it. Personally, I call it prudent frugality, and I consider their penny-pinching methods to be quite effective and smart. The downer, though, is that few of my toys are new. In my childhood years I managed to demolish most of the new toys and trinkets my parents received for my naming ceremony and whatnot, because I liked them so much. The survivors are packed away in safekeeping. What's left are the rejects, the ones I was never too fond of or was slightly repelled by. I still look at them and try to think of happy memories with them, and come up relatively fruitless. Most of them have been stitched up from the wear of previous owners, or whatever runs them has burned out, or they're just plain weird, like they were running out of ideas in the toy factory or something. This is why I call them my Misfit Toys.
Kind of like people, aren't they? People you've met in the past who came there with good intentions but ended up getting shoved in a box. Unwanted. Not thought about. Because they were too weird, or too scarred, or no longer interesting. Those ones that were special to you have a special place in your home and in your heart, and if the events of PIXAR's Toy Story are real, gracious. I feel quite awful about how those misfit toys must be feeling, simply because they never found a way into my heart.
Funny and kind of creepy thought I know. Sorry about the blatant philosophy, but hey, this is a diary and these are my thoughts.

On a totally different note, I found a funny panda picture today. In case you haven't visited my profile page, which is so incredibly dull I don't blame you if you haven't, I have a frenetic obsession with pandas.

He's like, why did it have to die so young???

-Cheers, Shocks
