Other Reviews: Rogert Ebert | Rolling Stone | FromTheBalcony - Bill Clark
I am taking a break from this movie. I have started, watched a little over an hour of it, and have to stop. It's boring, none of it fits together, and there seems to be no purpose...yet. It's not over 'til it's over. I'll be back after I finish it
I did not get to finish this movie. My movie watching site got banned! Apparently they were doing illegal stuff, copyright infringement, etc. I thought they took stuff off that had copyright issues (I had seen many things on there removed for those reasons). I guess they didn't get enough of them. Ah well. Will have to find another one. Will rate it as I've seen it.
Finally, the review!
This movie is my genre. I love the superhero, fantasy type movies because they are generally action-packed. Key word is "generally." This one did NOT. This had no action in it for the first almost two hours it felt like (being an almost 3 hour long movie), save for the first 4 or 5 minutes, where the opening scene is a fight scene. It didn't piece anything together very well, in my opinion. I was lost. It was almost as if I was just watching it on a roll-a-dex with some of the pages missing. The action had just started picking up when I had to quit watching it, but it didn't feel like it was going to last. They had wasted too much time on trying to lay the foundation that they seemed to have forgotten to add the action in there until too late.
SpoiLERT! SpoiLERT!
A retired super hero is murdered at the beginning of the movie and the whole movie is about Rorshach, a masked superhero, figuring out who did it and why. He mingles with other retired and active superheroes such as Nite Owl, Silk Spectre, Dr. Manhattan as well as some old and new villains: Moloch and Ozymandias.
Through out the movie, Rorschach narrates what is happening in a sort of broken, grammatically incorrect english. He is, by all means, the coolest superhero in the movie (Comedian close behind - and he died in the beginning!). Nite Owl II looks too much like Batman. Silk Spectre reminds me too much of Wonder Woman. Dr. Manhattan is too powerful, in my opinion. Rorschach, however, is just the right mix of superhero, normal, and crazy that I feel would be needed to be how he is. I consider him the main character. And he does it well. I would agree with Bill Clark in his review (linked above) that if they made a whole movie out of Rorshach, it would "draw no complaints from me."
The rest of the characters were so-so. You saw the relationship between Silk Spectre and Nite Owl coming from a long way off. Patrick Wilson and Malin Akerman played their parts well, but their characters had little to no substaince written into them, I thought. She was hot, though.
All around it, it was slow. I had to force myself to watch parts of it. And I wasn't upset when I couldn't finish it. If I get the chance to watch it and finish it, I will update this..but good riddance.
I gave the End of the Movie a +1 because I did not get to watch it and most of the reviews I read said that the end was the best part and brought it somewhat together (though the overall view wasn't a verry good one). I think that was fair.
Did I like the movie? Meh.
Bold is point, Strike is no point. Italic is half-point.
