It's been a strange week...

11/19/2009

This week has been a strange one, that's for sure.  Starting off on Sunday which was, as some of you may know, opening day of gun season for deer hunting.  I went out with my dad, one of my friends, and his dad.  It was a pretty good day for the most part.  That morning I had a bunch of mice playing around where I was sitting, a couple squirrels, and birds flying around.  Saw a couple deer, but both were does, so I didn't get a shot.  I didn't apply for a doe permit this year.  So I just watched them bound across the clearing.  Later in the day my friend got an eight point buck that weighed somewhere around a buck fifty when it was all dressed out and my dad got a doe about 20 minutes after that.  That's where the strangeness starts.  My friend brought his Jeep back to put the deer in to take to a processor, but once both deer and all four of us were in, we hit a mud hole that sunk one of the tires.  My dad, having an F150, decided to try and tow him out.  Upon getting within 15 feet of the Jeep, one side of the truck fell into a mud rut and buried the differential, meaning it couldn't be towed out by anything less than a wrecker.

We didn't manage to get those out until Tuesday.  Which meant spending Sunday night, Monday, and some of Tuesday being cold and wet and trying to get the damn things unstuck.  By the way, we were on a power line.  Which spells big trouble if you're caught being stuck out there.  Heading out one day we found out that the cops had come by to check the vehicled, which could have resulted in about a $500 ticket on each vehicle.  My dad called to find out if anything was going to happen and to explain they weren't trying to hide anything.  The cop said that he'd gotten up to the mud, though, "eh, fuck it" and wandered back to his car without writing tickets, since it wasn't his jurisdiction anyway.  Which was great news for us.  The bad news was we knew we'd need a wrecker to get them out.

When we finally broke down and got a wrecker to come pull us out (we tried removing them ourselves to save money, despite knowing it most likely wouldn't work) we got the job done in about 45 minutes.  The bill easily should have been between $400 and $600 per vehicle, offroad and risky as the pull was.  The guy who wrote out bills didn't even put down that we were offroad.  It was only $150 per vehicle.  Huge stroke of luck, if that's what you think it was.  Through it all, things moved pretty easily, despite having 2 vehicles in mud an hour from home.

Now, for the final stroke of oddity, I have mail at my parents house from the HR Department at MSU.  I have no idea what it could be, since I never applied or anything.  Interesting.  I'll be checking on it tomorrow.

You guys have to apply for a doe permit as well as your regular license? Ours just comes with 4 deer tags and you can get does on that as well as bucks.
