Adventures of Tatiana the Volunteer Coordinator

03/11/2009

It's been a while since I've had an installment of my adventures at work.

Being out in the community and on location with campaigns is always an adventure.

- A very nice little 8 year old girl came up to our booth and asked me what the Rainbow Society was. Her mom promptly grabbed her and said, "I'll tell you what it is, it's for people who make different choices in their life." I was furious. My volunteers were furious. One of them yelled after the woman, "We make dreams come true for children who might die!" I hoped that woman had trouble sleeping that night.

- Small children really feel empowered when you let them stick their shamrock to our display. One little boy exclaimed, "Daddy, this is almost as cool as new toys."

- Two ladies we approached insisted that the money we raise wouldn't help the children in her town because we are based in Winnipeg. BA!? We help MANITOBA children not just children from Winnipeg.

- It's amazing the amount of people who say no to donating two dollars all while trying to juggle what looks to be about $100+ in purchases.

- Eye contact won't kill you people! It won't I swear. Oh and a smile goes a long way to.

- We are not mall information. I have no idea where Build-A-Bear, Moxies or MAC is exactly. I can give you approximate locations at best.

- There is a different between terminal and life-threatening. Cancer can be both but they don't mean the same thing. How I describe it to most people is with life-threatening there is still hope of a cure.

- Parents who give their children money to put in our donation box rocks. Even better parents who put money in themselves and then give money to their children so they can put some money in are just awesome.

- To the little boy who put his birthday money into our donation box rather than spending his $10 at the Disney store. You made me cry. Your $10 will go a long long way.

- I don't believe you when you say you bought on last week. We launched at the beginning of this week.

- I also don't believe you when you say you'll get one on your way back.

- It's okay to say no to us. It really is. Ignoring us and pretending we don't exist is not okay.

oh gosh, that makes me just pissed as hell sitting here that the one lady was too ignorant to find out what your awesome organization actually is. how....lame. ugh.

I am glad you met lots of good people though.

Most people who stop me in the mall are trying to sell me something and I've had a few get nasty when I said I wasn't interested. I'm not saying that you guys do that at all, or that it's right, but that may be why people ignore you.

A little kid gave you his birthday money? That's so cute
