Right proud of myself, I am. I finished Moby Dick. I have really mixed feelings about this book. The over-the-top hyperbole and the endless, endless descriptions and examples referencing every author and culture in history - those made me roll my eyes. But, on the other hand, there is poetry here. Some achingly beautiful conjured images.
The slow burn of Ahab's total descent into madness, the ethical struggle of Starbuck - so gradual and subtle. Just masterfully written.
Do I recommend it? Only if you are a very stubborn reader.
I still see Gregory Peck's poor arm waving from the side of the whale when I think of Moby Dick - Oh Ye Dammed Whale! -
