Big News- we are moving!

03/17/2010

Ryan got a new job! yay. But...we are moving. To...WASHINGTON DC HOLY COW.

Background: Back in October, Ry interviewed (3 times!) for a really great internal audit job at a government agency in DC. He got a call on Friday being offered the position (almost 5 months later...) We talked about it this weekend and he officially accepted yesterday and gave his two weeks. I am really proud of him. He has been so miserable in his job the past couple of months. And, he found out he wasn't getting a raise this year. He was typically getting 10-15% a year. There just weren't a lot of opportunities for him to move up at his current company, and really not a lot of good opportunities in Birmingham for him. So...To DC we go!

Btw, did I mention I am already terrified, nervous, anxious, and every other random feeling that you could imagine. We haven't worked out all of the kinks yet. We did a lot of talking this weekend. His first day is going to be April 26th. So, he will be moving out there at some point before then. I will be staying here to finish out the school year and I will move with him over the summer. I am already dreading being apart. But, of course, we will make it work. I have no clue what I am going to do about a job for me. I'm not too worried about it. I think we should be fine on one salary for at least a bit- I can always do something part time while I figure out how to get certified in that area, get a job, etc. But, I don't see myself having a full-time teaching job by the fast. DC Public Schools are not currently in a good place. I don't imagine there to be an abundance of job openings there.

We were looking randomly on craigslist last night at housing. DC IS REALLLLLY EXPENSIVE!!!!! 1 bedroom apartments are $1400-1700 a month. ONE BEDROOM. I was looking forward to us buying a house in the near future but I don't see that happening now since we can't afford a $1M home. But, no need to worry about that now.

Bottom line, I am excited for Ryan. This is a fantastic opportunity for him. I am excited for us. It will be a fun, next experience. Something for us to do together. We will be closer to Ryan's dad (he is really excited!). Further from my parents by an hour (but they are also excited for Ryan, they know how miserable he has been.) I have never lived anywhere not in "the south." I am a Southern Girl. I have an accent. Yikes!

So, that is my news. Anyone on here from DC? What are the good areas? Do you like it? Any warnings?

Ryan is in Decatur auditing a company until tomorrow. So, it is just me tonight. Dinner time! Tilapia yumm!

Hope everyone had a good day! Moving updates to come I am sure. Add it to my list of stressful things...

There are quite a few good suburbs in Va and Md that aren't that expensive...and easily accessible to DC by public transit

See if Ryan can find a short term lease on a place (6 months) and then when you get out there you guys can look into the suburbs like MD for a better/cheaper place. Plus by then Ryan will get to know some people he works with and I'm sure they can also help point in the right direction for a good neighborhood. Then if your in MD or VA you can look at teaching in those states as well and it won't be too bad of a commute I know people that have moved to MD for government jobs similar to your husbands and they LOVE IT!!!!
