Bloop TOTW: Theme 216 30 May 2009 Should Teen magazines feature more "natural" looking models? Would we still buy them, or like the clothes they wear?Should beauty pageants and other events based on looks be allowed? How do we teach young girls to love themselves when they will always be competing with the "prettier" girls?

Well, first off i should note that I have pretty low self esteem. Not as low as i used to, but still not to where i would like it...

healthy living is something a child should learn as a YOUNG CHILD!
good self esteem is part of healthy living.
parents/caregivers are the ones who instill this into the children they raise!

"natural" looking models?
lol. technically, they all start off natural. then add make-up, kick ass clothes and some photo shop, and there ya go! basically, those models start off like we do when us "normal" girls take a picture, if we picked out outfits complimentary to our body shapes, went and got our make-up and hair done and photo shopped ourselves, we would belong in magazine's too! it's all about how you look at it. those models are regular people too.

beauty pageants and events based on looks?
i personally don't have a problem with them. i mean, we have events that are based on how fit someone is, or how fast they are, and EVEN how fast one can eat ... why not based on looks? there is an event for everything. i bet none of those beauty pageant girls can down hot dogs like TAKERU KOBAYASHI!!

teaching young girls to love themselves??!
this answer is getting a little personal, but when i was growing up, i had nobody teaching me how to love anyone let alone love myself ... so it's a hard thing to learn when your older. This kind of teaching needs to start when a child is young... not when they are teenagers, im talking about BEFORE. even if they don't understand everything, a child MUST be taught and told that they ARE beautiful, and CAN be anything and DO anything. They don't have to look like the girls in magazines, because they are just pictures. If you have to, take your daughter, get her hair and make up done and take pictures and get them photo shopped ... let them know that we are all fucking human and we are ALL pretty ... not just stupid magazine bitches.

lol.

sorry.

started to rant.

I really like your answers and agree with them for the most part.

I just have one pet peeve that's big in america. It's the fact that we're telling children certain things are okay that are not. Such as telling a child they are perfect just the way they are, and here are children growing up morbidly obese and having serious health issues. Sure the children are fine, but I think we do need to care more about the "weight" issue instead of trying to tell kids that it's okay to be heavily obese and unhealthy.

I'm not super skinny of anything, I just wish people taught children healthier habits and made them do it! lol. Thats my rant. =P
