Whopper Lie

08/03/2013

This is my first time here, in fact this is my first ever diary. Wish the first entry could be on a happier note, but I am thinking of terminating a friendship of many years, is it possible to know someone for years and then find out that maybe you don't really know them at all? This has happened to me, I have found out something that has made me wonder and I think my friend has realised this as things have become very distant between us, it is possible to forgive a huge lie, not just a little white lie but one big whopper of a lie? I don't really want to pull out of this friendship, but how many more lies have there been? Have given many opportunities to be told the truth but it's just not going to happen. Any suggestions on how I go about this?

Welcome to Bloop

I think only you can know about the friendship. Will you ever trust this person again? Have you asked why they lied, because their reasons might help you decide, & help determine if you think they'll ever do it again.

I was in this situation with a friend many years ago, I did forgive when the reason was explained, they promised me there would be no more lies, but I know it's still happening and like you not sure what to do about it.

Welcome Suggest you get out of the friendship, you said you have given them opportunities to tell you the truth, to me the trust would have been lost.

Welcome.

What did the person lie about? Is it something serious or maybe just something they are embarassed to share with you? Maybe try bringing it up and see what the person says.

If there is no trust anymore, it would be very difficult to have a friendship. Honestly you may just have to cut your losses and move on. I've recently had to do the same with someone I had been friends with since I was 10 (I'm 26).

Welcome to bloop! Like other comments above, any relationship is difficult when the trust is gone. Did this lie injure or harm you personally? Or was it something that just changed how they appear to you? Was there a "reasonable" explanation as to why the lie occurred (such as embarrassment or fear of losing your friendship if the truth was learned)? This is a tough decision but only you can truly decide if the friendship is worth saving. Good luck!

Thanks all for the warm welcome and for your suggestions, I was asked if this affected me personally, well not in the first instance, not directly, but it has shocked me and I think shattered any future trust in this friend. Going to go with what Twistedlady said and go with gut feeling, which is go ahead and terminate the friendship because not fair to either of us with no trust. If they had any trust in me over all these years they would have told me. Trust is very important to me and think if I carry on it will just cause big issues. Thanks guys
