My nan died a few weeks ago. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 1991 – she’d had an erratic memory for a while, but they finally decided something was wrong when they found she was giving patients at the nursing home she worked in the wrong medication (which is kind of funny in a dark way). My grandad managed to look after her for about 10 years, but in the end he couldn’t cope so she was put into a (very nice) nursing home near where he lived, in Herne Bay. After spending most days sitting with her in there (he ate lunch there every day) for years, he eventually ended up living there himself, and died 18 months ago. My nan hadn’t known who anyone was for years, couldn’t move or eat by herself, was incontinent, and finally about a month ago became unable to swallow.

So I honestly think it’s for the best that she passed away – she had absolutely no quality of life for so many years. In her position, I know I wouldn't want to live like that.

The scary thing is that almost everyone on my nan’s side has Alzheimers. She has 2 sisters still living with it, and a cousin who has just been diagnosed.

i've never lost anyone close to me, so i don't want to fill this comment with false empathy. it can't be easy, but it sounds like you're holding up well.
