Why Did You Bother Going To Church Today?

01/17/2011

Another shout out at the beginning of today's lesson, this time to RaisingBean. Her comment on my first entry was intelligent and insightful. I'm glad people are realizing what they already knew, and taking it upon themselves to make the world a better place.

Today is Sunday. Like many people on Sunday, you might have gone to church today. My question is...why?

Stop the prayers. Hit the snooze. You could have gone next week. Hell, why even go at all? If God is everywhere, why should we even force ourselves to go somewhere hot and uncomfortable? If He's just sitting right next to us on the couch, why should we have to inconvenience ourselves? Is it for the sake of image? Do we want people to look at us and see that we are churchgoing, God-fearing people? Who even knows if there is a God anyway?

The church is nothing but a farce, a way for people to judge you. Take control of your own life - be your own judge! Save yourself the headache, and do something more valuable with your time. And if there is a God, He'll forgive you. His son died for us already, right?

Stop lying to yourself. Church is unnecessary. If there is a God, you don't need to be shoved into a small room for hours each week in order to worship. And if there isn't, you're just wasting your time.

But hey - I'm not telling you anything you don't already know.

If God is everywhere, then my living room is a church. I'm sure God wanted to watch the Jets/Pats game today; God took prayer-voicemails.

I used to believe the "God is everywhere" rhetoric, but as a reverting Catholic I now realize that the weekly (or daily) mass is the ONLY place one can receive the Holy Eucharist, which Catholics believe is the flesh and blood of Christ. As a former Evangelical, I find a whole new motivation to attend church and it has nothing to do with self image or fear of being judged by others.

So, God isn't everywhere? And the only place you can go to worship God is Church? I'm just trying to understand your comment.

Catholics believe, as MadeToShine said, that the Holy Eucharist is the body, blood, soul and divinity of Jesus. You can't receive the Holy Eucharist just anywhere, therefore the time and space of Mass is believed to be sacred. Yes, God IS everywhere but Catholics believe that Jesus's real, literal presence is at Mass, in the tabernacle or the altar, depending on which part of Mass it is. Mass is where people can come together and worship Him and learn more about Him and His sacrifice for us.

However, we are also expected to dedicate our lives to God, therefore everything we do should be offered as a way to praise Him, so yes He is also everywhere else and we should act as imitators of Him.

Church seems to be for fellowship and education. You go to be with like-minded people, and you go to learn more about your religion. If you're being judged at church, it just means you're obviously going to hell and your parishioners were just trying to help you realize that. And if you don't go to church, the money buckets get lonely and go to the closet to multiply with the coat hangers. And if there is God, I hope he has a sense of humor, otherwise I'm boned.
