Snow, Comics, And A Soon-To-Be Library Outing

12/22/2012

SATURDAY
22nd December 2012, 8.55 PM.

Snow, Comics, And A Soon-To-Be Library Outing OK, so I admit, I do want to try out this layout which is basically the main reason why I wrote this entry. But I do have two things to say. Oh, yeah, and this layout is made by "Layouts!" and here's the link to his or her BloopDiary ---> http://www.bloopdiary.com/quotelayouts Just trying to give credit here. And I'm turning autoparagraphs and smileys back on.

So, at the moment, Deni is having fun, playing with snow with her little sister outside which is why she's offline. I so badly want to see snow! I'm happy for her, though. I hope she has fun! I probably would if I could make some snowballs and a snow fort and start a snow battle. ^u^ It would be probably cool! And yes, it definitely would be VERY VERY COLD.

And tomorrow, my mom might be bringing me to the library again. I want to see if there's any comics. There probably won't, though, 'cause I have NEVER EVER seen a single comic there. But that's probably 'cause I've never looked for comics, lolz. So I guess maybe that's all! Have a nice and hopefully snowy day for y'all, everyone. ^u^

Whoa, didn't expect the box to be on one side. Thought that it was supposed to be at the center, lolz.

If they have them, they're almost certainly all together in one spot. Have you roamed around the whole library and seen what's around everywhere? If not, they might be hiding out somewhere you haven't looked. =)

Yeah, I've never actually went around the whole library. >(^.^)< ^^"

lol I had where I used to live, but they were pretty straight-forward there - large square buildings with pretty open floor-plans. My library here was formerly a mechanic/garage, so it's a huge building and it has these other rooms off to the sides and stuff, I have no idea what's in them. One of them has kids stuff, I know, but I'm not sure what one! lol.

haha of course there are other comics. There are comics about virtually everything. There's biographical ones, one-offs of all sorts of fantasy, graphic adaptations of books... I've finished Neil Gaiman's Sandman (fantasy, historical fic), I'm a few volumes from being current on Bill Willingham's Fables (fantasy, fairy tale adaptation-ish), I'm in the middle of Brian Wood's DMZ (apocalyptic/dystopia/war, political commentary),I've read two of Joshua Dysart's Unknown Soldier (based on war in Uganda), I've just started on Mike Mignola's Hellboy (fantasy/paranormal, superhero-ish), I've read the first of Warren Ellis' Global Frequency (dystopia, sci-fi), and of Mike Mignola's Baltimore (horror)... Most of these I'd say are a bit too mature for you right now. But, Bryan J.L. Glass' Mice Templar and David Petersen's Mouse Guard are fantasy with anthropomorphic mice/animals (Mouse Guard is one of my favorites), those would probably be fine for your age. OH I forgot about Neil Gaiman's one-offs, like Coraline (which I liked), and I'm pretty sure there's more geared for younger audiences like that but I've not read them. And ya know what, one of my friends on another site is a big comic reader AND a school librarian, she might be able to suggest some other good titles for you. I will ask her! =)

Are there comics based on mystical or magical themes? :3

[The Dream Journalist|0 likes] [|reply]

Of course. Like I said, there's comics on everything. Coraline is about a girl who moves into a new house and discovers a special door where there's Others. The series Mouse Guard is about a legion of mice who fight off other animals to keep their people safe, there's castles and cities and such. The series Mice Templar has a similar type premise, but the main concept is mice vs evil rats. Th series Amulet by Kazu Kibuishi is recommended, very fantasy/magical nature. The book The Last Basselope: One Ferocious Story by Berkeley Breathed is supposed to be good. The Moomin books by Tove Jansson are technically probably aimed slightly younger than you but they're widely loved by all ages.

I've asked my friend, not sure when she'll be around to get back to me though. I've also posted on the book site I use, folks there may be able to give some good suggestions also.

I think you made my mouth drop open. But if my library doesn't have comics, where can I get some? If I have to buy them online, my father probably won't do it because:
1)He would say,"Don't waste your money lah" 'cause he firmly believes that books with little words are not good books
2)He doesn't really approve of the idea of shopping online

Stores sell them- larger regular bookstores usually have a section of them and specialized comic book stores, of course. Obviously I don't know your specific location, so I just searched Singapore, and came up with http://www.focussingapore.com/interesting-singapore/book-stores/stores-comic-book.html and http://the-master-list.com/International/Indonesia_Singapore_Philippines_&_Japan/index.shtml#Singapore and http://www.comicsconnection.com.sg/index.aspx?uc=outlets, maybe some of those listed are close to you that you could check out. And I bet if you went to one, the proprietor could help you find some age-appropriate ones about stuff you like. =)

Sorry, but what's proprietor? -.-" And also thanks for searching for me!

The person running the shop. You're welcome =)

Okay my friend said the Amulet ones I mentioned is really loved by the kids are her school and Kazu Kibuishi in general, and also suggested Castle Waiting by Linda Medley (which is fairy tale "revisions"/adaptations), which I thought was pretty decent, and said Shannon Hale's Rapunzel's Revenge is another great fairy tale retelling, also anything by Doug TenNapel - his Ghostopolis is amazing. So, there's some good recs from someone in the know! lol.

Also, someone mentioned Maus. I wouldn't recommend that one right now, it's a Holocaust memoir about the author's father, illustrated with mice and such. It's good, but I'd save that for a few more years down the road, it's a bit too heavy for right now I'd say.

Okay so I asked on the book site, like I said, and people gave a bunch more suggestions:
Girl 1:
Redwall: The Graphic Novel - I gather Redwall is a fairly popular series. Also features mice so would pair nicely with the ones you suggested.

Babymouse - Might be too young for her actually. More mice. Not so much fantasy, more of the typical kid stuff but the main character has a vivid imagination so it might work.

A Christmas Carol (Campfire Graphic Novels) - seems appropriate for the season. The ghosts make it fantasy-ish.

The Arrival - some elements of fantasy; completely graphic novel with no words beyond the title. Seems to be pretty popular.

Timothy And The Transgalactic Towel - short fantasy/sci-fi GN. I found it entertaining.
Girl 2:
Foiled by Jane Yolen - It's perfect for what you want, and I enjoyed it.
Girl 3:
Seconding Foiled, especially because the sequel Curses! Foiled Again comes out soon.
Also Broxo, Bone, Hereville, Zita the Spacegirl, and The Golden Twine.
Plus anything by Hope Larson or Gene Luen Yang.

So, now you are positively overwhelmed with suggestions!

Haha, thanks! I just hope my parents will at least allow me to get one since an adult just recommended them to me. ^u^

[The Dream Journalist|0 likes] [|reply]

They're all age-appropriate though. Definitely not recommending mature content!
