New 'Jon and Kate' Episodes Show Their Life Apart

Two new episodes of "Jon & Kate Plus 8" that aired Monday night gave a peek into what the couple's separate lives are like.

In the first episode, Jon and Kate Gosselin set about remodeling their kitchen, despite their personal troubles.

"It's kind of strange that we're remodeling our kitchen in the middle of our separation," Jon said, "but it's something that we planned beforehand."

When the kitchen remodel proved to be wreaking too much upheaval on Kate's ability to cook for the family, she decided to rent a home at the beach until the remodel was completed, but Jon did not come along. "Many times every day it occurred to me this is minus Jon," Kate said of the trip, noting that the kids mentioned that they wished their dad could have come along. "I think Kate and I needed a break from each other," Jon said of staying behind on the trip, which took place before the couple announced their separation.

In the second episode, Kate showed off her ability to hit the ground running in her new life, as she tried new things on a backyard camping excursion with her kids. She set up a tent and built a fire for the kids, who made s'mores by the fire.

"This is a very, very difficult time right now. Those words almost don't even cover it," Kate said, saying that she wanted to make this time period "easy and painless, if that's possible" for her kids.
