Timehop today reminded me that it's been exactly three years since I first took part in The Big Tees Sleepout. This is the one picture of me at the event:
(Yes, I'm reading The Big Sleep. What of it?)
And then tonight was the second episode of Famous, Rich and Homeless. This was part of Sports Relief. In the show, four celebrities agreed to sleep on the streets for a week. And they were merciless on them. They were stripped of their clothes (they were given other clothing), their money, their cards, their mobile phones. Everything. Then told to survive. After three days they were partnered with homeless people.
And one thing was abundantly clear.
Anyone can become homeless.
Anyone.
All it takes is for one or two things to go wrong and the domino effect kicks in. All it takes is one mis-step, one belief that you will never get addicted.
And that's it.
Hell, I'm lucky to have a forgiving landlord or it could easily have been me on quite a few occasions.
And services are in dire, dire need of help. Some of the charities in question need the money they get from the sleepout or they are closed for good.
Here is an article from before the last one about why I do this.
This is, admittedly, shameless begging. This is also not a time to be shameful.
