So today I coached my first class. I've been certified since June (or was it July?) but I haven't done anything with my certification, except use it to my advantage when traveling. ("Hi. I'm a level 1 certified trainer in the states. can I work out here today? I'll blog about it!" this gets me free admission! woot!)
but today I coached my first class.
It's a weird gym. I would NEVER work out here if this were my home, but they are giving me the opportunity to job-shadow and train and learn how to coach. There are a lot of coaches (all american/ex pats) who I can badger with questions as well.
The problems that I have with their training:
1) they have class every 30 minutes. this is TOO fast.
2) there are about 8 people per class, but the coach isn't always looking at people. (this means there are more accidents.)
3) The coaches seem to think their phone is more important (or the day-to-day life) than their athletes who pay money for this class/gym.
Other than that, they are great coaches. They have a lot of good advice (which I am taking advantage of!) and using.
my style of coaching:
-if someone has bad form, drop the weight or modify the exercise until they have the proper form. (bad form = injuries = BADNESS!)
-If someone is struggling, being engaged and helping them through the exercise. Giving tips so they don't think about "dear fuck, this is hard!" they think "if I do X and Y-- it'll be easier. let me try!"
-giving an athlete 1 thing to work on (rather than 23094320). "I just want you to focus on ____."
-some of the more advanced athletes will "cheat". (meaning they will do 10 pushups but say they did 15.) I stand over them and count with them. Reminding them that me and their body are holding them accountable. (some people hate this... so I have to be good at reading people).
Overall, I did well today. And I'm really proud of myself I will love to see where this takes me later in life (will I do this as a job/career? or just a hobby?)
Either which way, achievement unlocked!
question to everyone:
if you've ever had a coach/personal trainer/physical teacher of some sort--- what are some good and bad methods that you find? (what makes you go back to a class vs never go back?)
