half marathon and counting calories

07/23/2013

Ok- so I got a pedometer a while back and use it daily. (I want to hit 500miles before I leave Australia, because this stupid girl thought that "the proclaimers" were from here.... derp. anyway... I walk about 5-10 miles a day.

I also quit sugar again. (the first 4 days are always the hardest).

I also ran a half marathon on sunday. (ow ow ow)

and I was traveling/eating very little in retrospect (when I travel- i eat when I can). Always home-cooked meals, never packaged food, etcetc.

ALSO! because I have a friend at my gym that asked me to, we're counting calories. I've never done this before, but the app "myfitnesspal" makes it kinda easy. (minus the whole "translating everything from kilos to pounds to oz thing"... ok... so my calorie intake says that i have about 300-600cals left at the end of the day.

I'm not eating that much, because most days i'm just not hungry. When I workout extra hard, I eat more.
I'm inconsistent with my eating--- but it's all decent/good food. (at least, it's mostly paleo, minus bread, because i'm going to be in SE asia and india soon and that's basically all they eat so I'm not going to bother going through that mess again.)

I weighed myself yesterday:
I lost 2lbs.

2 lbs!
after 9 days of this! I was disappointed, but figured "meh. whatever. I'll just keep trekking on."

yesterday, for whatever reason, I was starving. It must have been the half marathon that finally caught up to me. According to the "myfitnesspal" app, I had 90cals left in the day.

Today I weighed myself and I gained everything back. 77.6 kilos.

-----------
YET!
when I was traveling through S. America with a backpack, eating beans, rice, bread and (sometimes) chicken-- I lost weight. I was my skinniest at 74kilos.

What gives? Any one have any suggestions? I'm at a loss.

*note: it's winter here-- and fucking cold-- and so there is the possibility that my body is just holding onto fat. but you'd think that with crossfit + running + an active job + eating well i would look like nichole richie with a coke habit......

I'm clueless about this type of thing. Sorry.

I think counting calories/obsessing over your weight is a slippery slope. How do you feel? Maybe you've gained muscle and lost fat. Maybe you're drinking more alcohol. But really, how do you feel? That should be your most important concern.

I'm just guessing but maybe you are gaining more muscle with the crossfit and all, and muscle weighs more than fat. I wouldn't get too hung up on a number just go by how you feel in your clothes and energy level.

Counting calories has never worked for me. I've always found I'm hungry, not to mention the hassle. I just concentrate on eating good, whole foods and not worry about counting anything.
