"too enthusiastic"

02/27/2013

So remember the gym I talked about in the previous entry? The one with the coaches that I didn't like their teaching style? And remember how all of you gave comments that you wanted a coach to SHOW you stuff or DO stuff with you? or SAY ENCOURAGING THINGS?!

I was "dismissed" from Live Primitive Crossfit for 2 reasons: The first being that I am (and I quote) "Too enthusiastic. Too much." He said it was a cultural thing (maybe just for his box....) but the people there just wanted to be left alone to do their work. (Funny. I disagree mostly because those people don't know anything different and my presence was showing them that it can be different). But I digress. What a great thing to be dismissed for.

The 2nd thing was that I spoke with another traveler after I finished my Wod. (The WOD being a 4-rounds of stuff... which took people about 4-6 minutes... Too short, imo--posted it below). He asked me what I'm doing traveling, where I'm going, where I've been (I get this a lot). I told him that I'm trying to hit as many crossfit boxes as I can. He asked why I would come to Bogota if there was only one crossfit box. I corrected him and told him that there are others- like Mapana which is right down the street. I said "yea, each box is completely different. From it's people, it's workouts, it's goals, it's setting... I really like how crossfit encourages this! It's kinda a whole new ball game as far as exercise because you don't get this with anything else. I mean, dance studios all seem to be about the same, ya know?"

Well..... This was, apparently, overheard and unacceptable. "Did you tell someone to go to another gym?"
me: "Well, yea. Why wouldn't you? If they wanted to do Murph (a 40+ min wod) they can't do it here. But if they want this cool (cough) environment, they come here."
"It's bad for business. I think it would be best if you left now."

----------
Later, I put together the following:
1) Live Primitive is ran by americans (I knew this). They aren't really respected by the Crossfit community and their gym isn't making anyone who wants to become a better athlete. Just someone who wants to show off their fake boobs. (which is true... the women wore push-up bras to "workout" in).

2) The american coaches would openly bash Colombians on (semi-obvious) things, but it was said in a really rude/distasteful way... Things like "Colombians are never on time. They don't care about your time, they're inconsiderate people by nature." (which is TOTALLY not true! They aren't on time because who the fuck wants to stress themselves out that way??? It's a life-style thing.)

3) Live Primitive charges drop-ins (they charged that traveler) 20$USD for his class. Usually, when you're a drop-in you get a full-hour class and one-on-one coaching time and maybe some other perks... Depending on the gym and their staff. I, personally, haven't been charged for a class since traveling. I think being a blogger has something to do with it. But 20$ for a 5-min wod?!? and one with NO COACH!?? That's disgusting.

Anyway-- I made a phone call and the next morning (after being "dismissed") I went hiking with Mapana Crossfit.

Later that morning, we returned to the gym and I saw my traveler friend! I asked him what he thought about each gym and without prompting he echoed exactly what I just said.

Justification.

He said "yea- you asked how you could be a better coach. You were the ONLY coach there, in my opinion. And I've been doing crossfit for 2 years now."

-----------
In totally other news-- I had an epiphany the other day. (Spoiler: this isn't about working out....)
It's almost March. A year ago I was living in Seattle, soaking wet, hating my life, miserable; SAD had over-taken me, and I was ready to murder someone. I remember when Suzanne (one of my best friends) came back from Australia and I was just BURSTING to tell her ANYTHING... SOMETHING about my life that wasn't "I cried for the 87th straight day today."....

I kinda want to ask Live Primitive for a letter saying "We dismissed LN for being too enthusiastic". To frame it. Something to remind myself that energy and happiness MAY, actually, be a choice. That I can manipulate everything that controls happiness; medication, food, location, exercise, boyfriends, etc. Sure events shape a lot of things-- but you can choose how to react to those things-- and that choice will determine your happiness level.

So I guess I've made some pretty happy decisions this winter. And, as someone who has battled Seasonal Depression forEVER.... I'm proud of myself for that. (that's all).

4-6 min wod:

4 rounds:
8 ring-rows
12 kettle-bell push-press
16 squat jumps with bar.

MODIFICATIONS FOR HOME-
for time:
4 rounds:
8 pushups
12 shoulder-to-overhead of a gallon of liquid. (take a milk container and have it on your shoulder-- then put it over your head. 6x each arm)
16 squat-jumps while holding said gallon of liquid (with both hands... make sure to keep your chest up.) You go into a squat and instead of just coming up, you explode/jump up.

Oh, crap! I hope my advice didn't contribute to your dismissal. I like enthusiastic trainers. If that's their mentality, I honesty think you're better off without that atmosphere.
