Passover at my house

03/29/2010

Tonight was the first night of Passover.
My family has a Seder.
This year was one of the smaller gatherings. We only had 17 people. One Passover Seder we had 30 people in our house. (where would you seat comfortably 30 people?)

This year we had the following at the table in order:
my father sits at the head of the table. down the left side was his parents, than me, my twin, his wife, my older brother, my uncle Joe, Cousin Heidi, Cousin Hayley, Dana, Bobbie, Dina, Aunty Sarah, little cousin Jalen, my sister and my mom.

We go through a prayer book that teaches the story of Passover. How we were slaves to the tharos in Egypt. We caried out bondage and Josh led us out of Egypt and into the land of Isriel where we were given the commandments.

Along the jurny, we could not have time to stop to let the bread rise or to harvist the crops. In memory of these things we are not aloud to eat surtain foods. Mainly, bread and any bread product and no beans or corn of any form.
This is called keeping "koasha" for Passover which is different from keeping Koasha all year round.

It is nice to have all my family in one place together. My grabd parents who are 92 and 90 all the way to my cousin Jalen who is 11 and very nice to have my cousin Hayley travel all the way from NJ to be with us. many laughs and memories shared from over the years.

My Par leans over to me at one point and says "it is nice to have the same people here year after year" It is nice. However, I wish he was more correct. Everytime someone passes away from my life I always title my entry as "another dish was taken away from my passover Seder".
There was Uncle denis, who was not my real uncle, just my dad's best friend. Uncle Gabe. Who was my Aunt Sarah's husband, Heidi's father and Jalen's papa. There was my uncle Todels, who was my grand father's oldest brother and Pungy and Fran. Punchy was a friend of my father's and his hmm I dont know what she was, but Fran only passed two years ago. All these people were taking from my Passover Seder in the last 10 years.

However, in the cyrcle of life, as Simba learns from his father, people pass away and people get added to the dining room table. Last year we didnt have Hayley in our life. 8 years ago, we didnt have Lindsay, Justin's wife, as a part of our family and 11 + years ago, we didnt have Jalen around yet.

Hopefully I will be as lucky as Justin is someday, and I will have my own beautiful wife sitting next to me at our seder... someday.

Happy and healthy Passover to all my Jewish friends
A friend sent me the below joke in an email. I thought it was funny.

G-d first went to the Egyptians and asked them if they would like a commandment. "What's a commandment?" they asked. "Well, it's like, THOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY," replied G-d. The Egyptians thought about it and then said, "No way, that would ruin our weekends."
So then G-d went to the Assyrians and asked them if they would like a commandment. They also asked, "What's a commandment?" "Well," said G-d, "It's like, THOU SHALL NOT STEAL." The Assyrians immediately replied, "No way. That would ruin our economy."
So finally G-d went to the Jews and asked them if they wanted a commandment. They asked, "How much?" G-d said, "They're free."
The Jews said, "Great! We'll take TEN!"

P.S. 14 years ago from this day, March 29th, 1996 was one of the best nights of my life. At the time, I called it the best night of my life.
It was my junior prom and I got to take my best female friend of so many years, to my prom. We dont talk any more but it is still a night I'll never forget.
Slow dancing to "my life"

Even 17 people in one house is a lot! Goodness! I couldn't do that at my house, it's too small.

thanks for the insight on your seder though. It's fascinating to read about stuff like that!

That joke was pretty funny too lol

I have over 30 cousins just on my dad's side.
My grandma sets up these long tables, from one side of the basement to the other.

I can't wait until I have someone to bring to the holiday dinners also.

Haha, liked the joke!
And I'm glad prom was a wonderful memory for you.
(:

I remember back when my family used to have all those huge dinners and everything, but since my great granny passed, we don't do them anymore. It saddens me at the loss of tradition. I know she is probably very sad about it in heaven.

Yes, it was a huge dream of mine. And it took a lot of work to get it together. But now that I have it running, it's only gonna get better.

The next show, which will posted Sat sometime, will be all about music. I'm featuring underground, unsigned, or lesser known bands. I even have a couple that are in the Bon Jovi vein that you may enjoy.
