What Jonathan has been up to at work

03/24/2011

HI, so I know some people love to hear what I do at work and except for the tragity, I have not spoke much about what I've been actually doing at work.

A little background: I work with adults who have severe mental illnesses. (schizofrenia, bipolar, severe depression etc) in a group home. I run social-life skills type groups and help with the "house meeting" as well.

The House meeting consist of planning menus and handing out chores.
Each client makes a dinner for the entire house on their preassigned day. (which almost never changes)
Each client completes their assigned chore daily.

The clients get to cook what ever they want within our budget. We very rarely say no, except if they are making the same thing as the person who is cooking the previous night.

However, they usually cook the same exact thing every week... for the most part.
A makes turkey burgers on Wednesday
B makes pork chops on thursday
C makes either frozen pizza or chicken nuggets on friday
D makes pasta and groundbeaf on saturday
E makes chicken on sunday
F makes shaved stake on monday
And since we currently only have 6 clients in the house, a staff member makes dinner on Tuesday.

We have been trying to get them to make different meals.
However, two things acurred to me last week which I subsequently wrote to my boss about.

1. the residents don't know "other things" to cook and don't know how to think "outside of the box" when coming up with things.
2. (as my coworker points out) she knows even less things to cook.
(she is from another country and only eats her ethnic food, what ever that is)

I explained to my coworker that if we take a piece of chicken, put some cheese on it, make pasta and put red sauce over it, we call it chicken palm If we take that same piece of chicken, cut it up with some veggies, throw in a pan with some teriachi sauce, and make some rice, it's a stir fry If we take that same chicken, put some BBQ sauce on it, ...

So my "HOME WORK" is to come up with a list of 10000 meals they can make, with the recipe, and show the clients and have them pick one.
Having the recipe there, any staff member who maybe working, can help out.

I will explain, as I did in above, that one item, (chicken, fish, stake, sausages etc) can be made 10 ways each if we just use a little bit of our imagination.

When I shared my idea with my coworker, she practicly begged me to do it. She said it would be very helpful.
So... we'll see how it goes.

(that was basicly the email to my boss, names not used to pretect myself)

My boss basicly did a football cheer over my idea. lol
Here is a few emails she sent.

*i think this is great! it would be awesome if residents start cooking such things as attached. Plus, with me needing to show the menu for approval now, it would be great to have dinners like these.. people would be shocked if we had these on the menu...

please let me know if there is anything i can do to assist in ensuring we move forward with ideas such as what you attached. Ill talk w staff as well to ensure she starts to put stuff like these on the menu's

Thanks!

*also, as i have not completed the big meat order - I can purchase some of these ingredients if the residents will cook them. when you discuss w others, let me know what they think.. and if you think i should purchase any of these meats in bulk, let me know. ill make sure to check with you before i do the bulk shopping.

thanks again!!

*very good! so when are we going to add these awesome dishes to the weekly menu?

another idea would be for a staff member to go to a book store and browse the cookbook section to find one that has relatively simple recipies so that the residents could look through it and see what they might want to make.

This just made me hungry lol But this is a FANTASTIC idea. It will help them feel a greater sense of achievement if they can do more than just one kind of a food a week I think. Bravo!
