Girls, Please Help Me Understand This

05/24/2011

Here's the story.  True story.  Betty and Terence have been friends since they were teenagers, and they have many mutual friends.  Many of the mutual friends have hinted (in the early years) that they should be together, but it never happened.

Fast forward to many years later when most of their friends are married.  They are not.  Betty is the best looking girl in that group of friends and Terence is the best looking guy in that group.

Terence hardly keeps in touch with this group of friends anymore.  He sees them about once every six months.  Whenever he sees them at a dinner or gathering, Betty has shown signs or hints of interest to Terence.  This is especially true at times when Betty isn't with a boyfriend and Terence isn't with a girlfriend.

Amy is a close friend of Betty and has recently join this clique of friends.  Amy, a mature married woman who is the type to want to help her friends, knows about Terence from the girls in the group.  Recently, this clique of friends went to the wedding of one of its members, Linda.  The night before the wedding, all the girls in this group spent the night together.

Here's my question to all the females reading this.  I need to ask you to tell me if my interpretation of the following is correct.

At a wedding banquet, Amy asked (actually pulled) Terence to dance when a slow song started playing.  On the dance floor, Betty was also slow dancing with her new boyfriend, Larry.  (Betty's boyfriend is a funny, friendly, and wealthy guy, but the whole group of friends knows that he lacks Terence's good looks and Terence's depth of character.)  Amy while dancing with Terence offered to switch partners with Betty and larry, to get Terence to dance with Betty.  Larry in a joking way grabbed Terence to dance and got everybody laughing.  Although it was a joke, the strange thing was Terence felt Larry grabbed him in an aggressive way as if to keep Terence from dancing with Betty.  Although nobody told Larry what the group of friends with history knows about Betty and Terence, could it be possible that he sensed something and he felt threatened by Terence?

The main question I have to the girls is this:  Did the girls arrange the night before to try to get Terence to dance with Betty?  Could it be, despite Betty having a new boyfriend already?

Terence has noticed that in gatherings in the past where Betty did not bring a boyfriend and Terence did not bring a girlfriend, Betty always sits next to Terence and the group of friends always try to arrange it that Betty would sit next to Terence.

Terence however is not interested in Betty being more than a friend to him.  He and I are both wandering if the girls were actually still trying to bring Terence and Betty together, despite Betty having a new boyfriend already?  Also, even if Terence is now interested in a relationship with Betty, would Betty really dump her new boyfriend Larry for Terence?
