My daughter reads A LOT. For this reason I signed her up for 7 summer reading programs. The nice thing is that some are online and some are local so she gets a variety of programs. :*) Below are the links to each of my posts about the different summer reading programs she's a part of. These are all posted on my Blog, but I wanted to share them here too. Reading is so important for children and to be honest, not enough reading is done by children these days. Anything that motivates kids to get reading is something worth promoting! Kids enjoy a feeling of accomplishment and pride when they complete a goal, so these help with that as well. Below are the links to all the info on the different programs I found this year for my daughter. So far she is really enjoying them! :*)
Scholastic has a free online summer reading program for kids: Scholastic Summer Reading Program Review. You keep track of the minutes your child reads each week and log them in. Your child can win badges and fun prizes. They also measure the minutes against landmarks which is really neat.
Sylvan also has an online free reading program: Sylvan Book Adventure Summer Reading Program. With their program you sign your child up and they take short quizzes on the books they've read. Sylvan has over 8,000 books listed so you should be able to find plenty that your child likes. Kids can earn up to 150 points per quiz that they can use for prizes.
With the: Summer Reading Bingo free printable I found online, you can create a Bingo chart of books for your child to read during the summer. As they get a line across making Bingo you award them a prize. If they get the whole chart filled in they get another prize. This is another fun way to encourage reading! There are charts and reading lists for grades 1-6 plus a blank chart to put your own books.
If you are looking for a program that give free books, check out the Barnes and Noble Summer Reading Program. Your child has to read 8 books and fill in the form, then you go into a store to get a free book from their book list. They have books for grades 1 through 6.
If you live in Colorado, New Mexico or Texas check out the Dion's Club Read program for kids. They give away great prizes and your child just has to read 12 books. Unfortunately they are not national so it's limited to places that have a Dion's.
Most bigger towns and cities have a public library that does summer reading programs like this one: Local Library Summer Reading Program. Check out the info to see if you'd like to get your child involved in your library's program! If your local library doesn't have a summer reading program, why not suggest they start one? :*)
And lastly, if your kids enjoy going to Chuck E Cheese check out their Chuck E Cheese Reading Rewards Calendar for your kids to earn free tokens! This helps your wallet some when you take them!
With a lot of these programs you can set it up in a way that works for your child, as well as creating rewards unique to your child. That's the nice thing about them! Get creative and have fun! :*)
