The Whale Rider

The Whale Rider--some native name that i cannot recall

This is a very uplifting story about overcoming adversity and roles in native Maori culture. It is the story of a young girl, Paikea, who longs for the acceptance from her great grandfather. The older man refuses to see what others see in Paikea until after she turns 8 years old and his eyes are dramatically opened. She is the motivator for bringing his particular tribe into the 21st century while holding onto all the traditions special to the Maori people. I know this is a short summary of the book, but I do not want to give too much away. If you do not like to read or know someone else like that, it has been made into a movie as well. I honestly feel that the movie does the book a great justice for once. I would recommend either version for which to immerse yourself. Don't take my word for it though, but rather, experience it for yourself. End of summary.
