i've got this diamond that don't know how to shine...

09/30/2009

Ok, so it's been a very long time since I've updated. I don't really feel like pouring things out here anymore, though.

Orientation was an incredible experience. Living in the wilderness completely separated from what I've come to call the Annoying Life gave me a lot of perspective on myself and where I stand as a human being. It sounds really corny, but you go try it. Try having to spend twenty-one days with ten other strangers and get along with them. I was pleasantly surprised that my group melded as well as we eventually did. It was nice to let down my barriers and avoid judgement on others. I hope it will translate and reverberate more in my life.

School is going to consume me this semester. I have ten books for one class on top of six others for my other two classes. The ten booker is a Middle East class, so it will at least be incredibly fascinating. Now if only I could stay awake long enough to finish my readings. I was already assigned about 200 pages before Thursday. Ouch. I just have to keep reminding myself that this is preparing me for what's to come in my near future.

I'm also taking a class entitled The Color Line in US History. Taught by a lady who does the Kenya program and has lived with the Masai people for fairly extended periods of time. She's truly an incredible woman who has so many great things to say about the world. It will be another intense reading and writing course, but totally worth it.

And then I'm taking a research methods and theories class. How to write an incredible paper that will get you in to better graduate schools who will give you more money to attend. Right? Right? It's truly going to be helpful, and I believe my professor, conservative as he may be, will really give me a chance to flourish as an individual.

Um, I'm falling asleep. Which is never a good sign. I have good pictures of orientation on other social networking sites if you're really all that interested.
