and i can't remember life before her name. [questions + photos]

07/03/2009

names have always fascinated me. how they sound, what they mean, the impression they give to others.
when i say that i'm interested in what names mean, i don't mean in that literal sense where "cameron" means "crooked nose" in gaelic, and "ariel" means "lion of god" in hebrew. i mean, what do they mean for our lives? how does a name affect the way we're perceived, and the way we perceive ourselves?
i could go on about names for days. seriously.
but here's today's query: when does one "become" their name? additionally, has the internet changed that?
here's what i mean: when i was younger, i used to try imagining myself with another name. usually it was one of the alternates that i knew my mom had wanted to name me, and that my dad had shot down. sometimes it was a friend's name, or just a random name i'd heard. i had a hard time doing it, even tho i'm not particularly fond of the name i have.
often, i'd ask my friends what they thought my name should be, if it wasn't the name i'd been given. they would always argue that they couldn't see me as anything else. it's true that it's very hard to come up with name "b", when one is acquinted with someone by name "a".
that's where my addendum about the internet comes in. when one is known as "girlsetsfire", "music_is_my_boyfriend", or some random email address, do real names matter? when it's so easy to come up with an alternate you online, does a proper name mean anything?
i'm sure that several of you out there know kelly, aka emma: which do you call her in your head? is emily the strange named as such in your mind? (hint: that's not her real name. shock.)
and now a couple of self-indulgent questions: [reference photos below]
1. what do you think my name is? [if you don't already know].
2. who/what [in terms of names] do i "look like"?
3. if you do know my name, do you think it "fits"? alternatively, what other name do you think i could pull off?
i don't often pimp my diary, but i'm hoping that there are some (relative) newbies reading this entry to answer my questions. as explained above, i'm not sure my faves/regulars will be able to answer in an unbiased manner, but they can surely try (and i encourage them to give it a shot).

[i look like this:]

i'm not planning on changing my name or anything like that. like i said, i'm not head over heels in love with my name, but at the same time i can't picture myself as anything else. this is just an exercise in fun/curiosity.

I know your name. I think I even have your address. and I have your phone number. I'm such a stalker

I've always been my name. And it's many permutations. From day one, my dad said, "It's Elizabeth - no nicknames! No Beth, no Betsy, no Liz, no Liza, no Betty, no. No. Nicknames." First one to call me "Libby"? Dad. Additionally, I'm only Libby at home in PA, or with people who knew me before the "switch" in 05/06. Elsewhere, I am Elizabeth, mostly for work or formal things, but I've taken to being Liz for casual acquaintances, and some work things.

As for the online thing, go Google "libberding" and see what you get. It's all me, I can pretty much guarantee it. The only reason I'm not libberding on here is because I'm known as Libster (which was one of my first online names, and I've been here since at least 03), and because I am very staunch about not changing that. However, libberding has become as much of a name for me as my actual name, and it's actually quite important for me, business wise, because it's all about branding myself. And when you're starting out, it's always best to do what you can to be recognized.

despite knowing your name for reals, i could see Crystal or Tabitha. i think the crystal thing is most likely spawned by you reminding me of a friend i have of that name, but the Tabitha i have no idea.

I with Emily (sadly, I don't know her name).
I know you, gurrrrrrl.

I honestly can't see you as anything but what you go by to me. Your first name is too formal for you. Your nickname is just perfect. (I'm trying to be all incognito and not drop your name, for the sake of other peoples answers)

Sadly, with a name like Kayla, there isn't really much you can do by way of nicknames. Unless you're you, and you call me lala. :] Plus, I'm not very creative, so "-kay" it is.

I'M with Emily**

I'm sorry. It was going to bother me. >.>

I'm gonna guess Brittany?

you're name should be FOXXXXYYYYYYY.

knowing your name, i think it fits. It's unique but not in a ridiculous "Shafawndatoya" way. Sorta edgy, but sweet? It fits you haha

If I haaad to pick an alternate for you, I'd say Chloe? or maybe Natalie? those are sort of biased though, because you give off the same sort of vibe as friends of mine by those names.

When I was little I wanted my name to be Jasmine. After Princess Jasmine from Aladdin. And I thought it was the coolest name EVER. Then I saw Independence Day and the main woman character was named Jasmine and she was a stripper. For an odd reason, this intensified my love of the name. I was a weird child.

But I'm with you on the fascination of names. I've gone by Rachel-Linn my entire life. Like, people have just used my 1st and last names as a combo 1st name haha. And my brothers have ALWAYS called me Ray (or Ray Charles...lol) Despite the fact that my birth certificate is actually RachAel (long last name that was my mother's maiden name)-Linn. And going to college I felt like a fake when professors and other people were introducing me with my legal name. Like, it's been a serious identity crisis because I suddenly have to go by a name that, despite being close to what Im used to, feels completely foreign to me.

This was epic-long and I havent slept in awhile so Im sure it's perfectlyyyy coherent hahaha to sum it up: names are weird.

hahahaha yessss it was meee! I didnt even know it was up there, I got a call at like 2am from the guy who had sent it to me who submitted it and he was like "CHECK TEXTSFROMLASTNIGHT. RIGHT NOW. YOU'RE GOING TO LOVE ME. YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY GOING TO LOVE ME"

I'm happy a majority of the people have voted it a good night, because it def was hahaha

I was always the same way with my name. I just always felt like it was too long, I wanted something shorter that couldn't be nick-named. I've been called Krissy since the day I was born, so I'm sort of like, "Ma, why didn't you just name me Krissy?"

oh. em. gee. I totally forgot about the makeup tutorials! Remember we had our diary and everything!? I feel like I should start it back up, now. Hmmmmmm........

And yes, I totally am photographing my food cuz of you, I'm easily impressionable (& know a good idea when I see one lol)!

[mixieStar|0 likes] [|reply]

I'm totally biased. I can't see you as anything else, and mostly because when I think of names it's only because you look slightly similar to people I know with those names.
The internet thing is really interesting. Of course, before I know Kelly's name was Kelly, I thought of her as Emma. But being curious and overobservant (is there such a thing?) led me to find out her real name pretty much the same day I started reading her. It's probably also because I always wonder about someone's 'real' name in internetland, and I think it's partly because of my perfectionism, and partly because I am curious of how their name 'fits' them or what it means for them, as you put it.

RYC: I have a video but it's taking he piss trying to upload. His dancing and singing were spot on. It was creepy.

I know your name, but in my head or talking to other people [mainly my fam, when we were in london] you're spange.
To my family & others who take it upon themselves to shorten Samma. i'm just Sam.
i hate it. I introduce myself as Samma. All of my information for work is the same. School was the only place "Samantha" was used.

I'm obsessed with nicknames, and names in general, and I think you suit yours.

It's different-ish, it's cute, it's just really you. I can't explain it.

But I would always think of "Puck" as "Puck", or "Emily the Strange" as "Emily." It's just habit.

LOL
yeah it would be!
not even our little towns we play in are closer!

uh, when I'm at parties with creepy people, my friends and I introduce ourselves with fake names. Sometimes it gets ridiculous though and we forget who said what and we end up blowing it. but still, you feel hella suave when you lie and people believe you hahaha

[youaretheroots|0 likes] [|reply]

well dude, strangely you kinda look like a Gillian to me. Or if you were a super butch dyke, I'd say you were a Mitch.

Already know your name, could possibly see you as a Jenn or Jess... *shrugs* but I do think think the nickname that rhymes with your name works very well.

[Ezeekiel|0 likes] [|reply]

when you name something you limit the possibilities of what it could be. by giving something a name you give it certain attributes. it has certain connotations. but we need to name things, people. that's where my fascination with names comes from.

i can't imagine you by any other name.

with that said, i had a blue lollipop from montana's after supper and i looked at tongue in the mirror on the drive home. i laughed and thought of you.

true story.

1. what do you think my name is? [if you don't already know].
Spange. Or Ange
2. who/what [in terms of names] do i "look like"?
I'd actually say you look like an Allison. Typically though, when someone asks me that, I think of a person I personally know who looks the most like you and then use their name. And you look like an Allison I know.
3. if you do know my name, do you think it "fits"? alternatively, what other name do you think i could pull off?
I do think Ange fits you.
