Yep, I've heard that argument - people were saying it last time I posted about it. I'm not a die-hard fan of the book by any means, and I sort of see the point, but I don't think it's tackling the problem in the right way. It's making skinniness into a sort of taboo. The reality is that there are plenty of teenagers who are quite naturally skinny - skinnier than Jennifer Lawrence. So criticising actresses for being skinny is unrealistic - everyone's body is different.

And equally there are people in the world who really don't have enough to eat and they are skinny as a result of that, and it's a horrible position to be in. Not at all glamourous. Jennifer Lawrence wouldn't have had to starve herself to lose weight - she would have just eaten a bit less and worked out more, and furthermore, she could have spoken out about how it's difficult to not have so much to eat and what a horrible position Katniss was in - to take away the glamour aspect of skinniness and point to the harsh reality. The book makes a huge point of Katniss's hunger, and doesn't glamourise her skinniness at all - her lightness is useful in climbing trees, but when she is being made up to look glamourous in the book, the make-up artists are putting on makeup in such a way to make her face look plumper and therefore more attractive.

I think the main problem is that Hollywood likes to make its heroines look glamourous - and it's the whole glamour aspect that makes teenagers want to emulate these stars. So the directors of this film felt they had to make Katniss glamourous. They could have had a skinny actress and made her look scrawny and unglamourous - like, they could make up her face in such a way to make it look skinnier, and they could easily make her look less attractive. And that would show the reality more. Katniss isn't supposed to be gorgeous and glamourous. But gosh, the make up actually emphasised the fullness of her face.

I dunno - I think if there was more emphasis on how some people genuinely don't have enough to eat and how they are scrawny as a result, then people might be less inclined to glamourise skinniness.

I'm taking an antihistamine + sudafed combo with some tylenol thrown in for flavor I'm hoping this tides me over until I can come home and just crash. If you get this comment before you leave, Advil Cold and Sinus used to be my best friend when I'd get colds. I just didn't have any in the house. Feel better!!
