new start... personal statement

10/19/2010

new start... personal statement this has to be the third or fourth time i've started a bloop diary... i've been a member of bloop since 2002 or so..

i'm slightly stressed at the moment because I am trying to apply to grad schools... apply to jobs.. and study for the GRE all at the same time. living at home really is starting to annoy me and I dont know if I can last until next August living here. I can't believe I made it this long without getting annoyed with my parents.

I miss my boyfriend.. he is my rock and he has so much faith in me. I am always able to get things done when he is around... unlike my parents who are being less than helpful with everything. I felt the need to start this diary today just to rant about them.

Wellll I am trying to write my personal statements for my grad school applications and I felt that I needed some input. SO here goes nothing....

Excitement, pride, and joy are three words that I use to describe how I feel after a successful therapy session. I love the sensations of contentment and gratitude that I feel after helping a child with a severe language disorder communicate easier, or successfully teaching the child with a fluency disorder techniques to help him stop stuttering. These experiences that I have had as Speech-Language Pathology major at Elmhurst College are the reasons why I want to obtain my graduate degree in communication disorders.
I was not always interested in Speech-Language Pathology as a career path. I initially attended Elmhurst College as a nursing major. However, after a couple of below par grades and tedious classes, I realized that nursing was not for me. I decided to research Speech-Language Pathology and I found a profession that I am passionate about. Elmhurst College provided me with an excellent introduction to Speech-Language Pathology.
I specifically enjoyed my clinical methods class. It gave me the knowledge that I need to succeed at writing graduate level papers and professional documents. In addition, we learned how to act in clinical situations such as patient interviews, conferences, and IEP meetings. After taking classes in Communication Disorders at the undergraduate level, I am confident that I have the tools and knowledge that will help me succeed in graduate school.
I also had the opportunity to give supervised therapy in my undergraduate program’s speech and hearing clinic. It was an exceptional precursor to the therapy I will be conducting as a graduate student. While planning and conducting therapy sessions, I received clinical experience in many different aspects of Speech-Language Pathology including: therapy techniques, report writing, collaborating with a co-clinician, and working under various supervisors. I spent 75 clinical hours giving supervised articulatation, language, and fluency therapy. I also had the opportunity to work in a collaborative group therapy setting. I helped plan and implement supervised therapy to five, 9-year-olds in a social group. We were able to teach the children how to act in social situations both in the clinic and out in the community. We took them bowling, simulated a restaurant, and had the children engage in conversation with each other. I enjoyed the group therapy experience, and I hope to have more opportunities to expand my skills as an energized and collaborative clinician in graduate school.
With the experience and education I will be taking into my graduate studies, I see myself fitting beautifully into Central Michigan University’s program. I want to expand my American Sign Language skills, and I am fond of the fact that Central Michigan has a Sign Language program. I also want to participate in both clinical practicum and research studies. While visiting campus, I met with Dr. Brad Swartz and he explained that it is possible to partake in both clinical and research opportunities. Central Michigan University’s communication disorders program can help me grow into a respectable, passionate, and well-rounded Speech-Language Pathologist. I can see myself earning my Master of Arts in Communication Disorders from Central Michigan University.

soo let me know what ya think...

thanks for taking the time to read

Welcome back to Bloop. I'm kind of new here myself though I've known about this site for a few years. You seem like a very motivated & goal-oriented person. I think you worded everything very well & I hope everything works out the way you want it to.
