An account of my free time

08/01/2010

Hi Bloop, how are you?

I've just finished a book called The Vesuvius Club, by Mark Gatiss (he of League of Gentlemen fame). It was surprisingly good, if a little bizarre. James Bond meets Oscar Wilde, if you will. Still, I read it in two days so it must have been engaging!

At the moment I actually have several books on the go, which I regret since I'm not really making headway with any of them. For the past two months (at least!) I have been reading The diaries of Evelyn Waugh. This is a ridiculously large book and I should have focussed just on it, rather than reading other books as well. Hopefully I will have finished it by 2011! I'm also reading Travels with a Tangerine by Tim Mackintosh-Smith (brilliant ex-pat novelist), Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan (I saw the film and it was brilliant!) and Sailing alone around the world by Joshua Slocum (the first person to sail alone around the world... as the book suggests!). As usual, I am right on schedule to not meet my task of reading 50 books a year. After two years of reading 48 books, I was determined to do it this year, but then I keep starting big books!

Yesterday, I did a bit of shopping, and along with a new pastel pink jumper that I don't need, I bought some baby blue wool and some pink wool. The baby blue wool is for a scarf I've started crocheting (I started doing it with a wool I didn't like so I unravelled it yesterday and started again). I shall post photos when it's finished. The pink wool is for knitting socks. For Mac's birthday, I bought her a guide on knitting socks, and I thought it was so cool I bought myself one too! My attempts so far have been a failure. I'm now on my fourth attempt, and am hoping the new wool will make it easier! Again, I will post photos when I've completed my first one (this may be in a few millennia, as I only knit a row a week at the moment!).

I also ordered a new nib for my fountain pen yesterday, and some new ink, so I can't wait for that to arrive in the post. I'm not really writing much at the moment (on the interwebs or otherwise), and everyone knows that in these situations what you need is not inspiration, but new toys! Haha.

Last night, I went over to Cheese's house with Mac, and we watched the Swedish version of The girl with dragon tattoo (with English subtitles obviously!). If you're thinking this will be a fun film to see, let me stop you right there. There was rape going on, as well as murders and nazis and corruption and general things that you don't really want to see. We actually did end up fast-forwarding a rape scene. It's one of those stories where you're like "this isn't based on real life - someone actually sat there and made this stuff up... Freak." So, that is my film unrecommendation for the year! Still, I know Acid Fairy is learning Swedish so she might find it educational...

Oh, and I calculated that I've spent £100 on Farmville since I started playing on it. What a productive use of money (and time).

So that's my life, how's yours?

Ooh, I may have to check that out! I tried to watch Let The Right One In the other day (which is a Swedish film about vampires), but it was really freaky and I couldn't finish it. It wasn't scary, it just made me feel horribly uncomfortable!

Ryc: Do you like musicals at all? Wicked is nothing like The Wizard of Oz. It's the story of the life of the Wicked Witch and why she became bad. The book it's based on is actually quite dark. But mostly I love it because the songs are brilliant.

Gosh, you paid real money on a Facebook game?? I heard there were people who did that, but I didn't really believe in their existence!

I have the book of the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I keep meaning to read it. I know what you mean by 'someone actually sat there and made this stuff up - freak' - I watched Dogtooth the other day and had the same reaction. A Greek film involving quite a lot of sick horrible stuff - incest, and violent chopping up of a cat, for instance - although in some ways it was disturbingly humorous too, which then makes me feel evil for laughing!

youve spent real money on farmville?? i wont even go on it at all.. hehe. probably with good reason. id be spending real money on it.
maybe you have trouble with the knitting because you only do a row a week. I would find it hard to pick it back up that way.
so you hung out with mac n' cheese? heheheheh.

i don't know how to knit. i'm sure i'd suck at it.

It's an AWESOME book (dragon tattoo), really absorbing. But I can imagine that the film adaptation would be HIDEOUS, so no way would I watch it. I don't like films of books anyway, they always cock up.

I used to be able to say that I didn't know anyone who spent real money on that stupid game. I, now, stand corrected. lol.
