Blog request the fifth

05/14/2009

Today's blog request comes from a friend that reads my blog but never comments in the comment section. He chooses to email me instead. He's weird like that. Adam wanted to know, "What's with the Fairy Parties? It's so intimiately connected with what you do doing the week isn't it?"

I never really realized a lot of people didn't know the whole story of the Fairy Parties that I do. Actually a lot people don't know I do fairy parties period. And a lot of people when they find out laugh hysterically can say, "Really!?" Though most of them aren't surprised I would do such a thing.

When  we were getting ready to move to Winnipeg I found myself in need of a job...again. One day I will blog about what all my job searching has taught and done to my mental stability. Moving on. I was looking at the Univeristy of Winnipegs student Job board online under the casual work section. I figured casual work might be the way to go until I found something permanent. I found a job posting looking for a Birthday Party Fairy. I kid you not I found this job on a job board. Tracey (My fairy Godmother) was looking for a fairy to be her back up fairy as her current fairy (who had been with her since she bought the business). Rather quickly I went from back-up fairy to full fledged fairy as the fairy I was taking over found out she was pregnant. So I took over at number 1 fairy. My fairy name is Twillight. Which causes some issues  due to the popularity of that stupid movie and insipid books.

I can honestly say that it's the best 1.5 hours in the world. It's exhausting though. So exhausting. We play games, do a craft, I read a story, the kids get dressed up. There is a lot of excitement and a lot going on and it's my job to make sure the kids stay in the moment. If they don't I could lose them. It also does wonders for your self-esteem. Being told by a bunch of little girls that you're the best fairy ever and they're going to invite you to their birthday parties is great.

Why do I do them? I get that question a lot. Part of it is because the extra money is nice. It's not a lot but it's nice having money to play with. Every penny I spent in Vegas was Fairy money. A recently bought an adorable Lululemon hoodie with my Fairy money. I bought the dress for John's office Christmas party with Fairy money. It's my fun money. It's nice to have it. But a major part of it is because why the hell not. Not a lot of people get to dress up like a Fairy on the weekends and go to kids parties. It's fun, it's enjoyable. It allows me to act (I've always loved doing that kind of thing) and I have a blast.

Now I never thought of the parties being connected to what I do for a living but when I thought about it some more I could see the connection. I make dreams come true for a living and on the weekends when I show up at birthday parties. The thing is on the weekends when I make the dream of meeting a real live fairy come true it's not because it's the childs last wish. The child is not dying. There is hope. Lots of hope. These are not going to be the last happy memories the family has but lasting memories. Sometimes the dreams we provide at work are the last memories the family has together. That's a hard thing to swallow.

My job has so many emotional highs and low (we can find out one of our kids is cancer free and one of our kids has had more tumours found all in one day) that in a lot of ways being Twillight offers me an escape.

From now until the Challenge for life I will be donating all my fairy money to our team.
