My mom and dad got me these mittens for Christmas. With a matching hat. Anything rainbow goes over very well with me. But these mittens are special and the story is very simple.
About a month or two ago when the weather got really cold here and winter officially started I was walking to work. I work and live downtown so seeing panhandlers and people looking for spare change is not uncommon. I give spare change if I have it handy. Well it was very cold. Cold enough to require gloves. I was wearing my beloved Old Navy rainbow gloves. You can see where this is going perhaps. It was -30 and I noticed a lone man sitting on the ground looking for change. He wasn't wearing anything that was suitable for the weather. His hands looked very cold. I didn't have any change when I passed. He asked, "Spare change miss?" I told him I didn't have any but I offered him my gloves. He took them and smiled and put them on. I told him to have a nice day and headed to work. I could stand my hands being cold for a two blocks. I don't know how long his hands had been cold.
I didn't mention it to anyone really. I told John after he asked where my gloves were after work. I then mentioned it on Weddingbells. My mom found out through weddingbells. She decided she needed to find me new ones and that she and my father had done a good job raising me.
So that is the story of my rainbow mittens.
