Baseball…
How I love you;
Let me count the ways.
Scraped knees and bruised elbows,
Playing with your friends,
The feel of air rushing against your face at a full run,
The joy of a homerun with all bases loaded,
Striking out a batter with a curve ball,
Sitting on the bench encouraging your teammates,
Secret signals shared among teammates,
The look of a good-natured mischief in a pitcher’s eyes.
The smell of freshly cut grass & red clay on a summer afternoon.
The sight of morning dew on a field before dawn.
The sounds of chatter among teammates undermining the “enemy”.
The umpire yelling “you’re out!” to some unfortunate player.
The sweet crack of ball hitting bat & the crowd erupting in praise!
A great diving catch far in outfield or a seamlessly turned double-play.
The sound of an organ pumping out THE tune for the masses.
A sense of belonging,
The pure joy of the game.
(Take me out the to ballgame.)
