Admit it, you've done it at some point. Deleted something you should have kept, or failed to perform that routine backup on your system, and then you find you needed something after all.
Well, my trusty ol' laptop, the one I bought in 2004, bit the dust. Bit hard. There's stuff on there that I really didn't want to lose. Not much, but even one file is more than I wanted to lose.
In this case, there was considerably more than one file.
Now, before you go telling me that "It's OK, data's usually recoverable", I'll let you know that I've done data recovery, and I know what's "possible". This is borderline lost. The sounds that come from the hard-drive pretty much seal the deal for total system fail. Of course, there's always a slim chance of recovery. Very thin. We'll see what happens.
In the meantime, I finally purchased a New shiny laptop. It works. It has Win 7, and a speedy little processor. It'll do. I'll still miss the other one, but mostly out of nostalgia.
I do plan to pay professionals to work on the old one. I really did lose stuff I didn't want to lose.
