Paleo diet--- in a nut shell

05/30/2011

Hey guys,

so Crystal asked me about my paleo diet... what i can eat, what I can't. what I eat when I go out, etcetc.

so-- first I should mention that I'm not on "strict" paleo. I'm on a "LN-modified" version.... Meaning that I don't give up the 3B's. (beer, bacon and blue-cheese). I basically just give up the following:

  • all grains (pasta, bread, rice, etc.)
  • all processed sugar. (i think i've actually become allergic to it. still can do honey, though.)
  • potatoes
  • beans (this includes chickpeas, sadly.)
  • peas.
  • egg yellows. (I can have 6-7 egg yellows a week... but i've even been limiting this.)

Paleo is a "hunter-gatherer" diet. I like to think of it as "anything i find outside, I can eat...... with some modifications."

here is a great site/list of foods that I can/can't eat
    This is "strict" paleo.

My version allows me to still eat dairy (1-2 servings a day) and have cheat meals (1-2 a week) and bacon (OMG!BACON!).

    --------------
    TYPICAL DIET REGIME:
breakfast = smoothie (made in a blendtec)
  • Orange juice
  • greek yoguart
  • banana
  • sometimes, frozen fruit

    11-sies = nuts, apple, something.

    lunch = salad.
  • Cobb
  • Chicken ceaser (minus croutons)
  • filet blue-cheese wedge
  • raspberry cheuve
  • etcetc.... We have lots of options at work.

    mid-day (4:30) snack = avacado/tomato slices

    dinner = ______________

    ----------------
    DINNERS:
  • omlets (made with mostly egg whites and 1 egg yellow) and veggies
  • grilled stuff. (chicken, asparagus, zucchini, peppers, onions, etc.)
  • shepard's pie (meat ground up, veggies, mashed califlower on top)
  • stir-fry. (chicken, peppers, onions, tomatoes, etc.)
  • chicken curry (crock-pot chicken with veggies and curry.)

    -----------------
EATING OUT (at restaurants, dirty-minded people!)
  • salads (anything not breaded is usually good)
  • omlets
  • tapas (I had this tonight. Little did I know that one of the soups' base was made out of bread. oh well.)
  • anything that is just meat. (mmmmmm.meat.) and veggies.

    ------------------
    "CHEAT MEALS":
  • I allow myself 1 cheat meal a week. Sometimes I don't even take this.
  • the first week I had sushi. (OMG! RICE!!!!)
  • Last week I had beer.. (OMG! BEER!!!! DELICIOUS DELICIOUS BEER!!!!)
  • This week I've cheated a lot this weekend. I had rye bread and corn-chips and this amazing garlic soup who's base was bread. (who knew???)

  • I will cheat a LOT more next weekend when I'm abroad. (OMG! INDIAN FOOD!)
    ------------------
    WEIRD CRAVINGS:
  • rice. (I'm not really a fan of rice. Don't really like it. for some reason, I was CRAVING IT like there was no tomorrow for the first week.)
  • cheesecake (again-- same thing. Don't really like cheesecake... craved this the 2nd week)
  • bread pudding (this is my latest craving.)

    -------------------
    COOL THINGS ABOUT THIS DIET:
  • I feel great. (energy levels are up.)
  • no hungry feeling
  • no crashes throughout the day
  • I've lost 5 lbs in 3 weeks. (on top of exercise and what-not)
  • all the weight i've lost has been in the "problem" areas of my body. (belly/thighs).... before when I've lost weight it kinda circulates all around. (face, arms, boobs, but never my gut).

    ----------------------
    BAD THINGS ABOUT THIS DIET:
  • my grandma is sooooo confused when she decides to cook for me.
  • my skinny jeans are too loose. (they cost 80$.... this greatly saddens me!)
  • I occasionally have odd cravings for things. (things I don't even like).
  • all my friends think i'm fucking crazy when I try to explain it to them.
  • I've gotten way more dehydrated easily. (I don't know if it's because the weather is warmer, or what---but I've been getting dehydrated headaches a lot more lately.
  • I need to take vitamin supplements. (calcium and a multi-vitamin.) This sucks for me because I have a hard time swallowing pills.

    --------------------
If ya'll are interested, I can post some of my favorite recipes that I've been finding/modifying.

Get chewable multivitamin and calcium supplements. I literally CAN'T swallow big pills, so yeah, chewable all the way!

Yay! Thanks for doing this..this gives me a better idea to see that Paleos dont starve and do eat a lot of good food!
See when I was reading about Paleo diets, they allowed tons of bacon and eggs. My problem area is my thighs and belly too and I KNOW its because of all the carbs and processed shit I eat. But Im addicted to it. So I think Im gonna try to follow this diet a little. Especially giving up the pastas, rice, bread. But Im glad I can eat Ribeye and fish! and I can eat sushi with no rice (even though thats the best part) and I was reading that with all the meat, veggie, protien, you get you dont NEED mutli vitamins and its actually not that great for you..but then each website says something different right. (Just like some Paleo websites say No cheese or milk, and I probably should give up cheese since I have a problem with getting spoonfuls to eat during the day and that doesnt help either!)
and you should post some modified recipes, Id love to see them.

    1) My nutritionalist say that multi-vitamins don't hurt. Whatever you don't absorb you just piss out. (so there is that)

    2) in regards to following the diet, my biggest advice is to give up processed sugar first. Do that for a month. See how you feel. (you'll get twitchy, moody, irratable, etc and you don't want to shock your system all at once... besides it's easier to give up 1 thing, rather than 2 (bread and sugar).)

    3) you work out enough that if you switch your diet (even for a little) you will lose all sorts of weight. (not that you need to!)

    4) the only other piece of advice my dude told me was "don't eat if you're not hungry". your body will tell you. the only exception is you should always eat breakfast, though.

The last thing is my biggest problem, I eat when Im not hungry..just wanna eat. Its like I have the opposite of anorexia. lol. I def think Ill get irrtiable without sugar..so what can you "snack on" ..fruit? smoothies?

    [CrystalsLost|0 likes] [|reply]

I snack on fruit or avacado or tomato or nuts. or i drink a shit-ton of water.

Pish. Bacon is Paleo. I'd starve without it.
One of my favourite podcasts had a title "Bacon saves manhood".

Also, I'm on what I like to call "poverty modified Paleo". I'm in between student loans, and relying on what's left of my meal plan money. So I haven't cut out dairy or nightshades or eggwhites like I *should* because I would literally starve to death.
My aim is Robb Wolf's autoimmune disfunction version, which is waaaay stricter. But I have Crohn's, and have already lost half my colon, so for me it's not about losing weight, it's about saving my life. That gives extra motivation to not cheat. *laugh*
Though I have lost ten pounds, and four inches around my waist in two weeks. And I'm in no condition to be putting my body through the crossfit abuse (abuse meant with love. I hope to be able to join a crossfit gym someday, when I've gotten my body back up to snuff) so that says a lot.
You might not be dehydrated... your minerals might be off. Once you stop eating crap, all of a sudden you actually have to worry that you're eating ENOUGH salt. Also, you're losing weight, so all the ick stuck in your fat might be freeflowing and making you sick too. *laugh*
And oh my god, eat the egg yolks! That's where all the nutrition is!

Yeah I definately couldn't do this. I don't eat a lot of grains with clean eating, but I still need my sprouted bread/wraps. And I couldn't go without beans
